Ryan Farthing – A Portrait of my Photographic Career

I was born in Colchester, Essex in 1974. My appearance coincided with the beginnings of my father’s commercial photography business – weddings and portraiture a specialty. I grew up surrounded by photographic paraphernalia and, as a matter of course, joined the company in the early 1990s. For five years, I worked alongside my father gaining an invaluable grounding in the traditional techniques and materials of photography, refining my skills and developing a passion for portraiture, but more particularly landscapes.

I turned freelance for a few years in the mid-1990s before changing direction completely and moving into I.T. whilst photography and my faithful Hasselblad ELM were put on the back burner. A few years' later friends rekindled my old passion when they framed some old landscape photographs that I had given as gifts.

The last couple of years have seen me move both into digital photography – I bought my first digital SLR only at the beginning of 2005 – and also to Dublin, Ireland where I have found a whole new landscape to inspire me.
